All America Award Winner: Baby Bear Pumpkin produces a nicely scaled down version of a classic jack-o-lantern in your pumpkin patch. Baby Bear Pumpkins are produced on normal pumpkin vines and weigh about 1-1/2 pounds, which are ideal for children. Flesh is well-colored orange and fine grained that is excellent for pies. Pumpkin seeds are semi-hulless. Baby Bear Pumpkin is tolerant to fusarium and gummy stem blight.
SOWING ... Plant pumpkin seed outdoors in late spring when ground is warm or start seed indoors 5 to 7 weeks earlier. Make a group of 4 to 6 pumpkin seeds placed in a ring about 2 inches across; cover with 1/2 inch of fine soil, well pressed down. Each ring of pumpkin seeds is called a hill and hills should be spaced 5 to 10 feet apart each way.
THINNING ... When pumpkin plants are 3 to 6 inches tall and (after second set of leaves appear), thin to the 3 strongest plants in each hill.
GERMINATION ... Baby Bear pumpkin germinates in 7 to 14 days depending on soil and weather conditions.
REMARKS ... Pumpkins may also be planted in rows 6 to 10 feet apart, spacing plants 2 to 3 feet apart in the row. Baby Bear pumpkins may also be planted among the sweet corn. Cut mature pumpkins from vines with pruning shears, leaving 3 inches of the stem.
