This Connecticut Field pumpkin variety produces large fruit, 10 to 14 inches in diameter, weighing up to 25 lbs. This standard cornfield variety, can be grown anywhere, and is excellent for Halloween carving of Jack-O-Lanterns. The orange-yellow flesh is valued throughout New England for making delicious pumpkin pies.
SOWING ... Plant Connecticut Field pumpkin seed outdoors in late spring when the ground is warm and all danger of frost is past. Make a group of 4 to 6 seeds placed in a ring about 2 inches across; cover pumpkin seed with 1/2 inch of fine soil, well pressed down. Each ring of seeds is called a hill and hills should be spaced 6 to 10 feet apart each way.
THINNING ... When pumpkin plants are 2 to 3 inches tall, thin leaving the 3 strong plants in each hill.
GERMINATION ... Connecticut Field pumpkin seed germinates in 7 to 14 days depending on temperature soil and weather conditions.
REMARKS ... Connecticut Field pumpkins may also be planted in rows 6 to 10 feet apart, spacing plants 2 to 3 feet apart in the row. Pumpkins can also be planted in among the corn. Cut mature pumpkins from vines with pruning shears leaving 3 to 4 inches of the stem.
