The Howden pumpkin is the original stain of the best selling pumpkin in the US. Similar to Connecticut Field, but more uniform, the Howden pumpkin produces large fruit, averaging 20 to 25 lbs. Howden pumpkin produces symmetrical round fruit with extra thick flesh that are ideal for Fall decorations, making delicious pies and is excellent for Halloween carving of Jack-O-Lanterns. The inside orange-yellow flesh of the pumpkin is valued throughout New England for making delicious pumpkin pies.
SOWING ... Plant Howden pumpkin seed outdoors in late spring when the ground is warm and all danger of frost is past. Make a group of 4 to 6 seeds placed in a ring about 2 inches across; cover pumpkin seed with 1/2 inch of fine soil, well pressed down. Each ring of seeds is called a hill and hills should be spaced 6 to 10 feet apart each way.
THINNING ... When Howden pumpkin plants are 2 to 3 inches tall, thin leaving the 3 strongest plants in each hill.
GERMINATION ... Howden pumpkin seed germinates in 7 to 14 days depending on soil temperature and weather conditions.
REMARKS ... Howden pumpkins may also be planted in rows 6 to 10 feet apart, spacing plants 2 to 3 feet apart in the row. Pumpkins can also be planted in among the corn. Cut mature pumpkins from vines with pruning shears leaving 3 to 4 inches of the stem.
