You've probably already noticed there wasn't a newsletter in July. There was several reasons for this... no new products came on-line, we were frantically trying to get the fall season up and running and everybody decided that July was the perfect time to consider some vacation time (including us). However, things are almost back to normal and, yes, we will cut right to the heart of things.

2002 Contest Winners New Monsters Pattern Book Nightmare Hair

This time around why don't we go straight to YANKEE HALLOWEEN first and see what has been going on during the long, hot month of July. While the Graveside Store is still under going changes in product for this season, Pumpkin Masters is live and only two weeks behind schedule (sort of like our New England crops this year). The 2002 Contest Winners are awesome! There are also three (3) new pattern books from Pumpkin Masters to add to the already long list of available pattern sets... fourteen in all. There has been no better time to research for patterns that may be missing from your collection while adding the 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 Contest Winners. These patterns are available NO WHERE ELSE...!

New products include Spooky Sparkles, Nightmare Hair and hair color that appears only in 'black light' illumination. Trick-or-Greeter, a sound activated greeting with two AA batteries included, is ideal for that very spooky greeting at your front door or to enhance a Halloween party. For kids there is a new BLO-pen Kit, Oozing Eyeballs, and Kid's Roll-n-Color, in addition to the Kids Carving and Activity Kit, Scoop & Saws, Punch Out Kits and Fright Lights that have been a standard for several tears now. The Graveside Store will be carrying several new products, as well. Besides a couple of devilishly delightful carving and decorating accessories, we are adding a beautiful set of Halloween linens... a linen towel, a terrycloth towel and pot holder with a pumpkin cookie cutter...absolutely adorable and the perfect hostess gift... that is, if you can't resist keeping it yourself. We also will be carrying a complimentary tote bag with the same goofy jack-o-lantern and Halloween background and the same quality textile and construction. These colorful and vibrant linens are from Stevens Linens, found in better gift stores and known for their beauty and durability.

And, from Ann Clark Ltd., another newcomer is a great Halloween Cookie Cutter Gift Box complete with six (6) large cutters (two ghosts, haunted house, bat, pumpkin, and black cat), laying against a backdrop of original artwork created by Ann Clarke. This whimsical scene of a haunted countryside visited by apprehensive ghosts, owls and witches can be removed from the box and is easily frameable. As a matter of fact, we suggest that it be framed. Ann Clarke is a Vermont native and artist who combined her talent with a paintbrush with her love of designing cookies. Her cutters are some of the largest and innovative in design that we have come across. This boxed set is the perfect compliment to your Halloween festivities.

Three more books will join our existing Halloween Library. GHOSTLY FRIGHTS FOR HALLOWEEN NIGHTS and PUMPKIN DECORATING will hang out with THE BIG BOOK OF HALLOWEEN, etc. For the crafters who are looking for something else to carve, GOURD CRAFTS is the perfect solution. There are twenty great projects contained on the pages of this soft cover book, designed for the weekend crafter. Paint, carve, bead, and do wood burning. There is some great stuff here! Recommended highly for crafters who don't want to stop on October 31st.

We'll have wire spiders and drill saws, Haunted Gingerbread Houses and Halloween Dominoes (to go along with Halloween Charades). The harder we try to dust away the cobwebs to make room, the more cobwebs appear. The gates to the Graveside Store are open now, however, it will be a while longer before the shelves are fully stocked with this years ghostly goodies. Oh, yes, remember Pumpkin Cheesecake and Ladyfinger Delight (Tiramisu with chocolate syrup spider webs on top). They're coming, too. These are some tasty treats you don't want to miss!

Okay. Take a deep breath. That is the scoop on Yankee Halloween. We hope we've chosen the kinds of items that help to make your Halloween celebrations the best they can be. Oh, and just a reminder... Yankee Halloween will have three of their own pattern books this season... a collaboration with a very talented master carver who lives on the west coast and whose pattern designs are innovative, creative and absolutely a 'must have' for the serious carver. That is our own special COMING SOON!!! Be ready for Autumn Scenes, Haunted Hollywood and Ghoulish Ghosties.

Yankee Halloween Graveside Store

Yankee Grocery has one new item coming on-line very soon. From Halliday's Harvest Barn comes a wonderful assortment of delicious cheesecake mixes (see above). They range from Back Forest Cheesecake to Blueberry-Lemon and a few in between, including Pumpkin Cheesecake and the delicious Tiramisu, a taste like no other. Watch for this tasty addition to arrive sometime in August

Yankee Gardener has experienced a very busy spring, this year. Next year, with what proves to be a nice expansion of the INSTANT GARDEN line of seed mats, we hope to be even busier. We will give you gardeners a heads-up... Instant Garden has some great new items under development for Spring 2004. Will keep you posted as the time grows nearer.

Yankee Harvest will be adding soon, by request, another item from Paine Products. We have had many, many, requests for Balsam Fir needles by the bag. So, not wanting to disappoint anyone, we've decided it is time to welcome it aboard. Once Halloween has calmed down, we will be adding some truly wonderful, and fragrant, items for Christmas. Paine Products are the purveyors of the North Woods. Their products are the things that memories are made of. Look for Balsam Bags to arrive sometime this month. Christmas items will arrive sometime in November.

About a 30-minute ride from here is a place where we spend a good part of our summer picking whatever fruits come into season. Recently it has been raspberries and blueberries. Next will be peaches, then pears and apples, then the mighty pumpkin.

Lyman Orchards is one of America's oldest family run farms, the pride and joy of the Middlefield countryside since 1741. The orchards and berry patches are teaming with people seven days a week and the Apple Barrel, the country store, is bursting at the seams with home grown produce, fresh baked goods, homemade cider and dairy products, and a terrific delicatessen. Among other things, they provide some tempting recipes for their wares.

We mulled it over and finally made a decision as to which recipe we would choose to share with you. The nice thing about this one is that we put our own little twist to it just in case. You see, raspberries are VERY perishable and may not be readily available in all areas. So, at the completion of the recipes we made a little alteration. Hope you enjoy either...or both.... Of these wonderful ways to lavish yourself with luscious summer fruit and berries.

PEACH RASPBERRY PECAN CRISP

FILLING
4 cups slices peaches
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 tsp. fresh lemon juice
1 tsp. vanilla
1 pinch salt
1 pint fresh (or frozen) raspberries

TOPPING
1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 cup flour
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/3 cup cannola oil

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Combine peaches, sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice, vanilla extract and salt in a large bowl. Toss gently to mix. Fold in raspberries and transfer to an 8x8-baking dish. Set aside.

Combine the light brown sugar, flour, pecans, and cinnamon in a large bowl and mix well. Slowly add oil while stirring with a fork until well mixed and crumbly. Sprinkle the crumb mixture over the fruit.

Bake 30 minutes until juices are bubbling and the top is brown. Remove and cool before serving. Top with sweetened whip cream, sour cream or your favorite ice cream.

If raspberries are a problem, replace with blueberries. and use almond extract instead of vanilla. Yummy...!
