![]() The On-line Version of our E-mail Newsletter VOLUME 2004-3 August 2004 Dear Friends:
Welcome from sunny and delightful New England. At least that is this afternoon's weather...!!! Last week we dropped to 59 degrees one night. By tomorrow we are expecting to reach high in the eighties, near ninety and humid. Back to the seventies by week's end. Like we always say in New England, if you don't like the weather, just wait a minute and it will change. Just between you and me, I think Mother Nature is having a bad hair MONTH...!!! This year, it seems, there is a lot more going on out in this big and scary world. President Reagan has passed to a better place, the WWII Memorial is open in Washington D.C. and we are remembering the 60th Anniversary of D-Day. Many of our fathers, husbands, brothers, uncles' etc. recall, or lived through, that historical moment. Many of our fathers, husbands, brothers, uncles and sons are away right now participating in yet another conflict. It doesn't seem to end, does it? For the first time in history, we are surrounded by threats and prey to an unbending lunatic, who has hit us where we live. This year, let's make any gift occasion extra special for the most important people in your life. Gifts are nice, of course, and as much as we would like to help in that area, the words I LOVE YOU and I APPRECIATE EVERYTHING YOU HAVE DONE FOR ME are far more meaningful. It never hurts to say the words and often. Especially now, in this uneasy world in which we live, we should cherish our loved ones even more. Our big news for this month is the addition of YANKEEGIFTS.Com to our family of web sites. It is an on-going work in progress. However, the main agenda is to simplify the gift giving process by categorizing many of our products and making them easier to find. A while back, we added gift messaging and we offer hand stamped gift notes appropriate to the occasion. We will be adding a number of gift baskets, both large and small, new collections, and a few gift ideas that won't be found elsewhere. There are some wonderful ideas from Paul's Candy Company, Colonial Birdhouses, North Country Windbells, Smokey Mountain Metal Arts and more...!!! And as always, we will ship wherever you say, and are happy to ship to APO's and FPO's around the world. NEWSLETTER COUPON SPECIALS -- 150 PRODUCTS ON SALE! There are a few new product additions (except for Yankee Halloween) for this month...but...we want to be sure that all you BBQ-ER's and grillers have the necessary sauces and rubs to do the job this summer. We did spareribs this past Memorial Day and July 4th weekends using Black Eyed Sally's rub and my own sauce concoction, going LOW and SLOW, and boy, we were treated to some of the best ribs that have ever come out of MY kitchen. (See, watching Food Network is not a total waste of time). Yankee Grocery has a great selection of marinades, rubs, hot sauces, and slathering sauces that will do your ribs, brisket, roasts and sausages proud. Look for Archie Moore's Wing Sauce, Dinosaur products, Sunfire Marinades, Black Eyed Sally's products (home of the best BBQ in Connecticut) Tabasco products, Brer Rabbit Molasses, and Bad Bandito's. Archie Moore's Buffalo Wing Sauces Spicemill Herbs, Spices and Collections And, I could not tell you which dip I love the best, so I guess it would be wise to try them all. Old Mexico Dip goes great with chunks of red bell pepper; Roasted Garlic goes with just about anything. Ranch, Broccoli Cheddar, and Mesquite Onion are lip- smacking good on chips. Try Crab, Smoked Salmon, or shrimp on you favorite crackers and the salsas are merely chosen by the degree of heat desired. The Horseradish-Dill brings out the flavor in crunchy raw vegetables while Chunky Chipotle makes a wonderful spread on those burgers and steak sandwiches. If you are frying the one that didn't get away in a big, black, cast iron kettle, one of Autumn Harvest's Bread and Batter Mixes will fill the bill, make no mistake. Yankee Gardener has a new and exciting line of garden tools. From the VILLAGE BLACKSMITH comes a nice selection of pruners, a six 'n one tool, and wonderful gift collections for the avid gardener as well as the novice. We are really excited about adding these items to our shelves. They will make fabulous holiday gifts for anyone with a green thumb. VILLAGE BLACKSMITH Hand Pocket Pruner, Pruning Shears, Garden Tools and Garden Gift Sets Please, please, please... just because you ordered them in April doesn't mean you plant them in April. Weather is, without a doubt, the determining factor. The evening ambient temperature should not go below 58 to 60 degrees. Yes, keep them watered but don't drown them. Don't mulch them. Don't fertilize them... there is fertilizer in the mats. The weather here in New England has been such that these mats should not have been planted before Memorial Day. Use a little common sense when dealing with seeds; if one mat doesn't produce, then there may be a problem. If more than one doesn't produce, the problem is not with the seed mat, I can promise you that. Don't be too eager to plant. You just may destroy your investment. The news at Yankee Halloween isn't good, I'm afraid. Pumpkin Masters has informed us that they do not intend to continue offering the annual contest winners for sale. Unfortunately, there will be no 2003 Contest Winners, and it is so noted up on the web site. They will, instead, be dispersing 2003 winners within various pattern books and kits over time. We regret that decision because we know that our customers have looked forward to having these unbound booklets made available to them each year. As for 2000, 2001, 2002, there is a very limited supply in stock. However, when these are gone, that will be the end of an era. We are in the process of developing Volume 2 of our Midnight Madness Collection along with Masterpiece Pumpkin and hope that these unique patterns will continue to cause a stir in the wide, wide world of Halloween. IN THE MEANTIME, ALL OTHER PUMPKIN MASTERS PRODUCTS FOR 2004 ARE HERE...!!! It is definitely party time at Pumpkin Masters this year. The really BIG items are Halloween Coasters, swizzle sticks, chillers, spreaders and wine bottle accessories. And, it is the year of the little pumpkin. Great carving and design ideas for those tiny Jack-be-little pumpkins are just a click away. The Yankee Halloween web site has been completely overhauled and is easier and more fun to navigate than ever. Visit Yankee Halloween and the Graveside Store for everything you need to haunt your Halloween this year. FUNKINS ARE BACK IN STOCK...!!! We have ordered a generous supply but we suggest you order early. Yankee Harvest Products on Sale This Month (See Bottom for Details) Cherry-Nose Bears Late summer is when the fruit begins to flow forth, the sweetest of nature's bounty. One of our favorite desserts is PEACH COBBLER. Made with a twist, a blend of two fruits and the yummy taste and fragrance of Almond extract, this dessert is absolutely wonderful when warm and served with a scoop of vanilla (or peach) ice cream. It's even better when the fruit was picked with your own hands. PEACH COBBLER FILLING: TOPPING: In large mixing bowl, mix all of the fruit with the sugar and flour, spices and almond extract. Arrange in large casserole and sprinkle with lemon juice. In another bowl, mix together the flour, sugar and butter with fingers until it resembles corn meal. Sprinkle over fruit mixture and place in 350-degree oven for approximately 45 minutes or until the edges are bubbling and the topping is golden brown. Serve warm with ice cream, cream or sour cream for a delightful dessert or try for a distinctive and eye opening breakfast...!!!
