Happy mid-winter from snowy New England. As I write this, I am looking out at a wonderland of white that has been deposited overnight. We have about six or seven inches and it is still snowing. Our feathered friends at Yankee Harvest have delighted everyone here today. They have made quite a show while visiting Yankee Harvest Restaurant just beyond the side door. We've spotted as many as four brilliant, red cardinals and their mates, sparrows, juncos, starlings, blue jays, and crows, of course, picking up the seed scattered on the ground. Our resident squirrel has shown his face a couple of times, however, we think the presence of the crows have caused him to think twice about raiding the pantry.

In any case, a new fallen snow is beautiful even though it can be a menace at times. And, the sight of our cardinal friends against the backdrop of pure white snow and deep, green pine trees is always a sight to behold. Here is a case where we have used bottle feeders to aid our bird population this winter ... and we liked them so much that we added them to our Yankee Gardener site this season. More about them later.

Although it is cold and snowing, Yankee Harvest is getting ready for spring. New Sheila's Select Dips Bell's Seasoning

Yankee Grocery has expanded its line of Sheila's Select to include Instant Soup Singles, the entire vegetable dip line, Smoothies, Fruit Dips and Mousse. French Onion is the newest vegetable dip available. Coming in the near future are two new soup mixes, Lemon Meringue Dessert Mix, Chocolate Mousse Dessert Mix, and three tempting and tasty pasta dishes. More on these in next months newsletter. Meantime, Sheila's Select has discontinued two of its soups to make way for the new additions. PLEASE NOTE: Chuckwagon Chili and Minestrone are in limited supply at Yankee Grocery. We will attempt to keep these two items in stock as long as possible, however, sources at the manufacturer tell us that their supplies are almost depleted. If these are among your favorites, we suggest stocking up because once they are gone, they are gone forever! A special note direct from the horses mouth ... Using Miracle Whip instead of Mayonnaise will drastically change the taste of the vegetable dip mixes. The Miracle Whip is much sweeter than the dips were formulated to taste. Please keep this in mind when using Sheila's Select Vegetable Dips.

What says Valentines Day more than any other flavor? Why, chocolate, of course. And what is possibly the single most rich, decadent dessert on the planet? Cheesecake. Top it off with cherries and slivered almonds and you have a chocolate cheesecake to die for.

• 1-1/2 Cups chocolate wafer crumbs
• 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
• 1/2 cup butter, melted
• 2 8oz. packages cream cheese, softened
• 3/4 cup sugar
• 3 eggs
• 1 8 oz. carton commercial sour cream
• 6 1 oz. squares semisweet chocolate, melted
• 1 tablespoon plus 3/4 teaspoon cocoa
• 1-1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1/2 cup whipping cream, whipped
• Additional whipped cream, maraschino cherries, chocolate curls and slivered almonds (optional)

Bake at 300 degrees for one hour. Turn off the oven and let cake remain inside with door closed for another half-hour (30 minutes). Open door and allow the cake to cool inside the oven for an additional half-hour. Refrigerate 8 hours. Remove the side of the springform pan and garnish as you wish. Enjoy...!
