![]() The On-line Version of our E-mail Newsletter VOLUME 2004-1 February/March 2004 Dear Friends:
Greetings from frozen New England. We have been in a deep freeze, the likes of which, I personally, do not remember ever happening before. We are experiencing record breaking cold that would put the North Pole to shame...!!! Last night our trusty, over worked, thermometer read minus 10 degrees at eleven o'clock PM with gusty winds that dropped the temperature to minus twenty to twenty-five degrees below zero. We understand that the temperature at the peak of Mount Washington in New Hampshire, the east coast's highest point, read out at minus 100 degrees below zero... Now, THAT'S cold...!!! The extended and unprecedented cold has put a grimp in our style. After catching up from the winter holidays we had to shut down for several days in order to protect the safety and well being of our staff. The warehouse furnaces simply could not keep up with the bitter cold. In addition, our local utility recommended that all unnecessary power use be suspended or we might be forced to endure rolling blackouts. In this cold the LAST thing we needed was to loose power. Therefore it was decided to suspend operations on the days that were especially cold, three days last week, and three days this week, and as needed in the future. We certainly do apologize for any delays that may have occurred due to this unfortunate and highly annoying string of circumstances. The weather is the one remaining thing over which we have no control. We are hoping that this blast of arctic air leaves very soon so that we can get back to normal. Which leads me to this next announcement. Until the weather warms significantly, most shipments of BLOODY BOLD BLOODY MARY MIX are on hold. You may place an order, however, the order will be held until mid to late March unless we experience a lengthy warming trend. This freezes and breaks. We hope that all of our customers had a joyous and blessed holiday season in December, and that 2004 holds the promise of all things wonderful. We had an extremely busy season. The Yankee Harvest Staff enjoyed a restful and well deserved rest from December 23rd until January 5th, when we had hoped to be raring to go. Enter winter...!!! And a few more unexpected days off. During this time the office was able to plow through piles of new and exciting things for this year. NEWSLETTER COUPON SPECIALS -- OVER 250 PRODUCTS ON SALE! Already Here: We have put together a collection based on the requests of some very interested customers. From Sleepy Mountain Maple we carry a tasty line of Maple Sugar and Maple Syrup products. The photographs that we took last year in New Hampshire created interest in the actual process of sugaring. Therefore, we have put together the Beginners Maple Kit which includes six (6) Grimm Spouts and six (6) hooks, a cast iron driver, a candy thermometer, the Official Vermont Cookbook and Backyard Sugarin', a handy and informative soft cover book on the practical application and joys of sugaring. This is a New England tradition at it's sweetest. This kit is ideal for Nature Centers, children's science projects and family gatherings. Do-It-Yourself Maple Sugaring Supplies Already Here: Our final NEW item this month hails from rural Maine and is most definitely "Yankee". In wartime 1940's a leavening agent was created to lessen shortages of Cream of Tartar. The resulting exclusive formula with NO ADDITIVES, NO ARTIFICIAL COLORING, NO CHEMICAL DYES, became an instant favorite with generations of New England cooks and bakers. The ORIGINAL BAKEWELL CREAM is a leavening agent that can substitute in any recipe calling for baking powder or cream of tartar. The results and we know because we tried it, were lighter, flakier, more superior bake goods. Even beginners in the biscuit department can't flub this one. Once again, ORIGINAL BAKEWELL CREAM, a New England tradition and baking staple has become available at Yankee Grocery. Over the coming weeks many of the items mentioned above will be arriving, one by one. Come back and visit Yankee Grocery and try some of the new products we have added to our inventory. We are sure you will be delighted with all of our new useful and tasty products. YANKEE GARDENER GEARING UP FOR SPRING
INSTANT GARDEN will be available March 1st, however, orders will be accepted now and held until that time. Judging by the phenomenal success of Instant Garden last year, it may be wise to place an early order and be sure of getting what you need. These seed mats are the gardening wave of the future and, as we found out last season, extremely popular. Available this year will be the NEW SUNSHINE GARDEN. We still carry the ever popular BUTTERFLY GARDEN, COTTAGE GARDEN, and SHADE LOVERS GARDEN in both 10 foot and 6-foot length rolls, and the CANDYTUFT RINGS for mail boxes and flag poles. Brighten every corner of your space with these great, easy to use seed mats and watch your flowers grow...!!! Our regular SODA BOTTLE FEEDERS and HUMMINGBIRD FEEDERS have been flying out of here. Naturally, it's that time of year. With record cold this winter it's been especially important to take care of our resident bird population. We've added a SODA BOTTLE THISTLE FEEDER, this season, and for warmer weather, a simple to use WASP TRAP. I, personally, can't wait try that one. Yet, from what we have learned, the wasp trap, good for hornets, yellow-jackets, bees and wasps, is an indispensable yard and garden accessory. It is an especially important tool if you or someone close to you has a bee-sting reaction that could be potentially harmful. Both of these items work with soda bottles and are simple to use and easy to store when not in use. These items, like all of our other MCNAUGHTON SODA BOTTLE FEEDERS, are great for scout, school, 4-H and nature community projects as well as for home and office use. From SMOKY MOUNTAIN METAL ARTS comes a stunning piece of garden sculpture that doubles as a garden bench. Smoky Mountain's Butterfly Bench is beautiful and functional...a masterpiece of design and outdoor comfort. The bench comes in four distinctive patinas, is completely handcrafted, and is a remarkable centerpiece for your garden, deck or patio setting. With out a doubt, your friends and neighbors will raise eyebrows when they see this exquisite example of timeless craftsmanship. Feel the butterfly wings wrap around you as you settle in for an afternoons' leisure. These Butterfly Benches are truly unique in design and constructed of sturdy powder coated steel for a lifetime of practical use. Check out the website for details and great pictures. Yes, there are still Halloween orders coming in, putting a whole new twist to the 'order early' concept. Although there are a few items out of stock, many are back in stock and available. We have received our annual Pumpkin Masters update early this year and boy, are there some neat things in store for the 2004 Halloween season. Of course, that is our secret until our estimated July 1st release date. In the meantime, we are pleased to also announce that our very popular collaboration with Masterpiece Pumpkins in making available his fabulous carving designs, will probably see a VOLUME TWO this season. Hopefully, work will begin soon on what I can assure you will be some new, and unique, carving patterns for Halloween and Autumn. We had a couple of requests for Christmas, or Holiday patterns last year. If anyone is interested in a book of Holiday patterns, please e-mail us and let us know. If there is enough interest, we might persuade our master carver to put on his thinking cap for some special designs. We are also considering some beautifully illustrated Halloween and Fall themed children's' books to add to the Graveside Store, including top quality coloring books that are both child and adult friendly. The graphics in these coloring books are far above your typical child's coloring book...the type you would want to keep for posterity. As stated above, Pumpkin Masters has a few surprises in store with more party related accessories and, of course, new patterns and carving supplies. ETA, July 1st, approximately. We are also planning on adding a story or two to our Campfire Tales, but you know, our staff has to be in the right frame of mind. We're not quite in the Halloween mode just yet. HOWEVER... now is the time to be thinking about those pumpkins. They need to be planted and tended and lovingly nurtured to be ready for harvest time. You see? Must start thinking "Halloween" early, after all. Comfort food seems to be more comforting during cold, winter months. A classic comfort food, one that everyone grew up with in some form or another, is meat loaf. Meat loaf is something that you either love or hate and no one made it better than your mama or grandma. There are as many versions of meat loaf as there are cooks. Here is our version, modified slightly from my grandmother's version over the years, but just as easy, tasty and satisfying, and certainly just as memorable. MEAT LOAF 2lbs. Good ground beef or ground chuck. Place all ingredients in large mixing bowl and mix completely with your hands. Beef mixture should be moist yet hold together well. Make any adjustment in seasoning. Shape to fit a large loaf pan. Bake at 350 degrees for about one hour. Test for doneness. Meanwhile, make gravy in large sauté or frying pan. Sauté mushrooms until golden. Add cream of mushroom soup and 3/4 can of milk. Stir until combined and heat through until it bubbles around the edges of the pan. Gravy should be creamy and thick. Turn off stove, cover pan and set aside. When meat loaf is done, remove from loaf pan and set on platter. Drizzle a few tablespoons of gravy over the top and sprinkle lightly with paprika for presentation. Serve the rest of the gravy in a gravy boat for the table. Best served accompanied by mashed potatoes, baked potatoes or macaroni and cheese, and your favorite green vegetable or stewed tomatoes. Now, that is a true traditional Yankee comfort food meal at it's best.
