What a Spring we've had, so far! While we had days in March that were sunny and warm, we've also had snow in April, frost in May and we are presently experiencing the sixth straight weekend day of rain. On the up side, our beautiful New England flowers are loving the cool days and plentiful moisture.

However, I personally would like to see sunshine pretty soon, and, weather conducive to opening up my windows to let in the fresh air. If you live in New England or points immediately south, such as New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, etc. I would still be careful when it comes planting.

We have had an explosion of sales for spring planting this year. Instant Garden, new to Yankee Gardener this year, has left here in droves and the seed sales have been extraordinary. Just a word of caution ... our unusual weather with cooler days and nights that have, in some areas, dipped into the thirties, is not planting weather. We have had instances where Instant Garden that was ordered and delivered in April AND PLANTED RIGHT AWAY, have not done well. These instances took place in New Jersey and New York.

Please use common sense when using this wonderful item. You are making an investment in your yard and garden and you want the outcome to speak volumes about how you feel about your space. Seeds will drowned and rot in soil that is drenched and the rain is continuing. Cold nights will kill the seed. The soil needs time to warm in the day's sunshine ... and stay that way to incubate the seeds even after nightfall. There is no need to rush. It is better to wait until things are looking up instead of loosing you investment. Summer is still two weeks away.

Smoky Mountain Metal Works is a family owned business nestled in the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains. This is the view they see every day and is the inspiration for their wonderful, handcrafted designs. The feel is rustic, weathered, and homey. The medium is 11-gauge steel with a rusty patina that offers the sense of use and age. They represent useful, everyday items that are definitely future heirlooms. New this month to Yankee Harvest is an exceptional item that we have been working to add to our Country Store for quite some time. ID Tags have many uses; the most important being the identification of loved ones, use as a medical alert, or an aid in locating a lost pet. Schools have found these tags very useful when in use during field trips and keeping students aware of their bus numbers. These tags come in many different, bright colors so as to use for color-coding, as required. They are made from stainless steel, making them perfect for camps, swimming pools, and vacation time. What a wonderful gift for your loved ones, big, little, or four legged.

NEW ARIAS WINDCHIME BRACKETS

In addition to the double hanging Bracket we offer with our Arias Windchimes, we now also offer the 15-inch bracket in white as well as black and we offer a nine-inch bracket, which will better accommodate the smaller chimes. These are also ideal for hanging bird feeders and small flower baskets.

Instant Flower Garden

Yankee Gardener has seen a bumper crop of Instant Garden sales this season. As stated above, when planting these unique and exciting garden mats, please, please keep in mind the prevailing weather in your area. In many sections of the Northeast and northern Mid- west States, it has been too cold to successfully plant anything, yet.

But, just to get things moving a little, we are offering the Instant Garden AND Hart Seeds for a 10% discount for the month of June. Plant those Freedom Gardens and Victory Gardens. Don't be afraid to get those hands dirty. Plus, gardening is an excellent way to relieve stress and connect with the great outdoors. Happy planting.

FYI: Hart Seeds will continue to be available through June 30th. As of July 1st, The Hart Seed portion of Yankee Gardener will be off-line until December 2003. That is when the 2004 seed selection will become available for sale for next season.

Scarecrows: Making Harvest Figures and Other Yard Folks

To celebrate the addition of our wonderful new Sleepy Mountain Maple web site to the Country Store, we thought there would be no better time to share a recipe or two using maple syrup. Now is when you will get the freshest maple syrup, straight from the sugarbush and into the jug! These two recipes are down home Yankee cooking at it's most delectable ... one to try now while the days and nights are still relatively cool, and one to try later when your local apples come into season.

OLD FASHION INDIAN PUDDING

5 tablespoons yellow cornmeal
4 cups milk, scalded
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup maple syrup
2 eggs beaten
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3/4 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup cold milk

Add cornmeal to hot milk, stirring constantly. Cook over low heat until thickened, stirring constantly. Remove from heat; add butter, maple syrup, beaten eggs, spices and salt. Mix well and pour into buttered baking dish. Bake in 300-degree oven for about one hour. Stir and add the cup of cold milk and continue baking for one more hour. Serve warm with sweetened whipped cream or ice cream of your choice.

MAPLE APPLES

2 cups maple syrup
2 cups water
6 large apples

Choose an apple that will hold its shape in the cooking process. Jonathan, Baldwin and Rome apples are good choices. Mac's are delicious but will turn into sauce rather than staying whole.

Boil syrup and water together for 10 minutes. Peel and core apples and simmer whole in the syrup until tender, turning carefully with a fork or large slotted spoon once or twice. Serve warm with a spoonful of the syrup and either sweetened whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. For something different, try a dollop of sour cream or vanilla yogurt. Sprinkle with coarsely chopped walnuts and enjoy!

In parting for this month, remember that school will be out before too much longer. There will be kids on bikes and skateboards and in-line skates, cruising down the streets. Balls will seem to appear from no where and even walkers can dart mysteriously from their given path. Driving an automobile is not a right. It is an earned privilege, earned because of safe driving manners, awareness and courtesy. Please keep our streets safe for our youngsters this summer.
