![]() The On-line Version of our E-mail Newsletter VOLUME 2003-3 March 2003
Shipments to us have been delayed in some instances, and we have experienced delays in shipping some of our more perishable products... particularly our glass liter bottles of Bloody Bold Bloody Mary Mix. We did try. However, broken glass and frozen liquid is not what our customers have ordered. Therefore, we decided to suspend shipping this item until we have a day or two of above freezing temperatures. As those days appear, and there have very few of them, we ship whatever we can. We apologize if any of our customers have had to wait for their order to arrive, but we felt it was better to hold off instead of taking a chance. In the meantime, we are all waiting with bated breath for the first signs of spring. As for me, when that first robin lands on our lawn, I am going to throw a party...! Folks, it's been a long, cold one...! For this month's specials please see the bottom of this newsletter. The coupon code for this month is EASTER ON THE YANKEE HARVEST WEB SITE

In addition, pruning season is synonymous with spring. After this winter, I'll bet that most of us would love an excuse to get outside and do some work. Florian Ratchet Pruners are the top of the line, lightweight, and come with a lifetime manufacturer guarantee. These quality three-ounce pruners are designed with strength and flexibility in mind. They are perfect for persons with arthritis or other mobility problems, increasing their strength many times over. Yankee Gardener is also showcasing North Country's Garden Bells this month. With delightful names like Island Pasture Violet and Pemaquid Pine Bell, these distinctive bells recall the fragrant flora that lines the coastal areas of this great country. A must for any garden, deck, patio or balcony, these sturdy, weather resistant bells captures the summer breezes and makes wonderful music. Also highlighted are North Country's Garden Guards, a whimsical group of country critters that protect your garden from unwanted intruders. If raccoons, squirrels and opossum make regular visits to your garden, this is a fur friendly and environmentally safe way to send them packing. Yes, they really do work...! AWESOME ALMONDS are a heart healthy, tasty, and easy to carry snack that comes in three yummy flavors: Orange-Vanilla, Cinnamon-Vanilla, and Cocoa-Java. These are NOT your typical, store bought almonds. These grade A nuts are dry roasted to perfection in orange juice, in coffee...delicately spiced with cinnamon and only the best vanilla. Not only do they taste heavenly, almonds have recently been touted as having very important, health conscious qualities and are a great source of fiber. We've tasted them all and could not come up with a favorite. I guess we will just have to keep all three flavors handy at all times. And, additional good news, these luscious Awesome Almonds are gluten free, all natural and kosher for people with specific dietary needs. A pretty good snack, eh? We sure think so. Have you ever wondered how your favorite restaurant makes their best onion soup? Do you love homemade but lack the inclination to go out and buy neck bones, a piece of shank, marrow and some stew beef, braise it, add the veggies and let it simmer half the day? Look no further...! This little bottle contains liquid gold...the kind used by restaurants to 'beef' up their soups and stews, make gravies and sauces, and flavor numerous dishes. SAVORY BASICS, in beef, chicken and vegetable, is highly concentrated soup stock that adds unbelievable flavor to just about anything. One bottle of Savory Basics makes a full gallon of soup stock for all of your favorite soups, while 2 teaspoons added to one cup of hot water can be used for an individual serving or to cook rice, noodles or even vegetables for your specialty dishes. Savory Basics can easily become part of your pantry staples. It's more cost effective with all natural ingredients (unlike canned broth), without the high sodium content of bouillon cubes, and the rich, hearty flavor of homemade soup stock shines through every time. Savory Basics is a pourable, liquid concentrate that is made from scratch the same way it was made in Grandma's kitchen, is all natural, with no preservatives and no added MSG. We are also proud to announce that Savory Basics has recently received the OUTSTANDING PRODUCT AWARD and the 2003 SPECIALTY FOOD PRODUCT OF THE YEAR AWARDS from the Connecticut Specialty Food Association. Last but certainly not least, OLD BAY SEASONING has joined the Yankee Grocery ranks this month. For seafood lovers, this great old-time seasoning has no equal. A special blend of herbs and spices, this familiar seasoning has been a Yankee favorite for decades, adding special flavor to clam bakes, crab and shrimp boil, and fish dishes from Florida to Maine. For New England transplants across the country, Yankee Grocery has several items on board that cannot be found, or are difficult to find, west of the Mississippi.... Bell's Seasoning, Old Bay Seasoning, Gravy Master, and Bloody Bold Bloody Mary Mix ... for a start. We are also working with the Connecticut Creative Cuisine Group, to bring you the newest and best in culinary delights from local entrepreneurs, helping them to showcase their products. So far, we haven't been disappointed. Awesome Almonds: Savory Basics Concentrated Soup Stocks: Old Bay Seasoning: Bell's Seasoning: Gravy Master: Bloody Bold Bloody Mary Mix: YANKEE HALLOWEEN:

Serve this wonderful red cabbage dish with a pork roast rubbed with Bell's seasoning and insert several slivers of fresh garlic into knife slits in the roast. Make sure the roast leaves behind a lot of brown bits in the pan and deglaze with two cups of beef stock (using Savory Basics, you can make only enough stock to make your gravy). Prepare your gravy by adding a teaspoon of Gravy Master and enough cornstarch /water mixture to thicken, as you desire. A great flavor and easy to prepare recipe using several New England favorite fall harvest ingredients. This is excellent side dish with roast duck or roast pork. Makes four (4) delicious servings.
