Colonial Birdhouses Vermont Shed Florian Ratchet Cut Pruner

Yankee Gardener’s Hart Seed selections, except for pumpkin seeds and assorted pumpkin selections, are on hiatus until sometime in early December. This is when the new seed stock for this year becomes available for the 2003 growing season. Any changes in availability will be determined at that time.

All other Yankee Gardener items are readily available all year. In particular, Colonial Birdhouse Kits and Florian Ratchet Cut Pruners make wonderful gifts at anytime.

Bird houses and bird feeders are especially important as cooler weather quickly approaches. If you have never supplied a house or feeder for your local bird population, why not try it this year. Building a kit is a relaxing and rewarding project, while providing for and observing the birds during the winter months is a fun experience.

Just remember... once you have supplied a feeder and bird seed, your birds will come to expect and rely on your generosity. Keep feeders clean and well stocked and the birds will keep coming back to reward you with hours of viewing enjoyment.

HINT: Hang feeder a good distance away from tree trunks. Squirrels like bird seed too...!

Even now, Yankee Harvest is gearing up for the Holiday season. The anniversary of 9/11 quickly approaches. Please take just a few minutes during the course of that painful day to remember, reflect and if you so choose, to say a prayer for the victims, the survivors and community services workers, volunteers and government officials who will take the visions and experiences of that horror with them everyday, wherever they may be. Keep your patriotic light shining brightly, keep flying the flag and feeling the pride. Yes, there is much wrong in this country yet beyond all of that, is a strength and goodness that transcends the madness that caused the 9/11 attack. Remember that our country was built on a foundation of freedom, each brick set in place over three hundred years by men whose words and works are more important now than ever before in history. Don't forget what really makes this country great. Take just a few minutes, that’s all...!

Here is the recipe of the month ... great for late season picnics, football games and tailgate parties, etc. A real keeper with a cool weather flair:


Roast Pork Sandwich with Caramelized Onions and Apple Butter Recipe

A delicious sandwich for football games, tailgate parties or at home relaxing. Serves 6 healthy appetites.

Roast Pork Sandwich with Caramelized Onions and Apple Butter Recipe Ingredients:

(Follow safe food handling procedures)

• 2 Tablespoons Butter
• 2 large fresh garden onion, halved and sliced
• 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
• 2 Tablespoons Balsamic Vinegar
• 1/4 cup Apple Butter
• 1/4 cup Dijon-style mustard
• 12 ounces (About 6 thick slices roast pork)
• 4 ounces (About 6 thin slices Swiss or Munster cheese)
• 1 loaf (1 pound, 16 inches long) soft white Italian Bread

Roast Pork Sandwich with Caramelized Onions and Apple Butter Recipe Instructions:

Heat butter in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add onions and thyme; cook stirring frequently until onions are dark golden brown, about 12 minutes. Add vinegar; simmer to reduce slightly, then remove from heat, set aside to cool.

Halve Italian bread lengthwise and pinch out center, about one inch deep, from each half, leaving approx. a 1/2 inch border of bread. Spread mustard mixture over each bread trough, then arrange 3 slices of roast pork on each bread half. Spoon on the onions, then top each half with 3 slices of cheese. Place top half over bottom half, and wrap tightly in plastic wrap. Can be held at room temperature 3 to 4 hours. Cut into six (6) delicious portions and serve.

Serving Hint: Serve this sandwich to family and friends with a glass of their favorite beverage. Enjoy this easy to prepare sandwich. Enjoy this hearty treat...!!! Hmmm good...!
