Mom's Tasty Old Fashion 50's Sloppy Joes on Toasted Buns

Serves 4 to 8 or more...!

AHHHH, those lazy days of summer, when the delicious aroma of the Sloppy Joes sauce cooking in Mom's kitchen, made your mouth water...!!! Those are the times to remember.

1 large yellow onion, fresh from the organic vegetable garden. (chopped)
1 large sweet green bell pepper, fresh from the organic vegetable garden. (chopped).
Discard the pepper seeds and membranes in your compost area.
4 stalks celery, fresh from the organic vegetable garden. (chopped) or if not available, then use:
1/2 teaspoon celery seed (optional)
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
2 pounds lean, freshly ground beef. (Follow Safe Handling Instructions)
1/4 cup brown sugar (packed lightly)
2 teaspoons dry mustard powder.
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder. (Adjust To Taste)
1 1/4 cups catsup.
1/4 cup sweet pickle relish. (optional)
1 cup beef broth. (1 beef bullion cube dissolved in 1 cup hot water)
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar.
1/8 teaspoon salt.
1/8 teaspoon black pepper.
8 hamburger buns, toasted. (As Needed)

  1. In large skillet, over medium heat, add the vegetable oil. Add the chopped onion, green pepper and celery.
  2. Cook the vegetables until they are just tender.
  3. Stir constantly to prevent them from burning, as this gives off flavors to the Sloppy Joes recipe.
  4. Add the ground beef to the skillet, and mix well while cooking. Break up the ground beef.
  5. Cook until the beef is browned. Drain off any excess liquid from the beef.
  6. Add the brown sugar, dry mustard, garlic powder, chili powder, catsup, beef broth and vinegar.
  7. Stir to combine all ingredients. Bring the Sloppy Joes sauce to a boil.
  8. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer the Sloppy Joes sauce, 20 to 30 minutes. (* NOTE)
  9. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  10. Serve over open face toasted hamburger buns. Great tasting Sloppy Joes to enjoy with your family.

Garnish with your favorite grated cheese toppings, if desired.

This is quick to prepare, and right from your organic vegetable garden. Sloppy Joes, an anytime or anyday family meal...!

(*NOTE): The Sloppy Joes recipe may be prepared to this point, cooled and stored in a covered bowl in the refrigerator overnight. Reheat the Sloppy Joes mixture when ready to serve.

Taste of Gloucester Cook Book The Taste of Gloucester - A Fisherman's Wife Cooks - 8th Edition
"The Taste of Gloucester" cookbook was created by the Gloucester Fishermen's Wives and the Cape Ann League of Women's Voters to share recipes of lesser known species of fish as well as familiar ones. Their cookbook, The Taste of Gloucester has sold over 200,000 copies. The Taste of Gloucester recipes are drawn from tradition and are variations of ethnic specialties for different occasions. The original purpose of the cookbook was the promotion of underutilized fish to help the local fleet diversify. Squid, Atlantic Herring and Shark recipes are scattered among those for more familiar species. Copies of The Taste of Gloucester - 8th Edition, can be ordered through the Yankee Grocery Country Store.
